“Fun, hectic and challenging – Sonja”, says Stein Berge Svendsen from Filmbanken, Lillehammer, who has written music for the dance scenes in the film “Sonja”. The film premiered at Collosseum on December 14th.
Sonja is a Norwegian drama film from 2018, produced by Maipo Film, directed by Anne Sewitsky. The film is about Sonja Henie, the greatest figure skater ever, who decides to go to Hollywood in 1936 and become a movie star. The film is partly based on true events. The main character Sonja Henie is played by Ine Wilmann, and Henie’s third husband Niels Onstad is played by Pål Sverre Valheim Hagen.
When there were problems clarifying the rights to some of the dance numbers in the Sonja Henie movie in time for the deadline, Synnøve Hørsdal from Maipo called Stein Berge Svendsen and asked if he could write new music for these scenes, inspired by the music of that time, as well as some updated versions of old recordings.
Because of the time pressure, the orchestra in Budapest had to be booked before a note was written, with only five days to write the music! So it was hectic days before the recording, but also afterwards to get the music ready, to the final mix. The film was fully mixed on Wednesday, December 12, only two days before the premiere at the Colosseum on Friday December 14th!
